We help people with communication and swallowing difficulties.

Our Speech Pathologists are here to support you to communicate functionally and more independently.

Our Speech Pathologists will discuss your communication goals and provide an initial assessment. The Speech Pathologist will work with you to find the best therapy to suit your needs. Our therapists will work with you so that you develop skills to tackle the challenges of everyday life. This might look like. Speaking more loudly or clearly, expressing what’s on your mind or using technology to get your message across.

We can also assist with swallowing assessment and intervention.

Swallowing difficulties, called dysphagia, are common after stroke, and in people with neurological conditions. We can help provide support with an aim to balance mealtime safety and enjoyment.

Our speech pathologists work with a range of different conditions including:

  • Parkinson’s Disease
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Stroke
  • Spinal Cord Injury
  • Cerebral Palsy
  • Huntington’s Disease
  • Traumatic Brain Injury
  • Intellectual disability
  • Various genetic conditions
  • Improving fluency
  • Improving speech clarity and volume
  • Improving language function to help you formulate and communicate your message.
  • Finding technology to help communicate. Alternative and Augmentative communication (AAC) can include alphabet boards, pictures and hi-tech communication devices, including eye-gaze.
  • Managing mealtime safety and strengthening muscle function for swallowing.
  • Working with occupational therapists for mealtime or mounting equipment.

At Mobi we draw from a wide range of therapy techniques to make sure you receive treatment that is tailored for your goals and needs:

  • Initial meeting to help us understand your difficulties needs and goals.
  • Assessments to test the appropriate area identified for improvement.
  • Explaining the assessment results and setting speech pathology goals with you
  • Evidence-based therapy targeting your goals.

Our Bella Vista clinic boasts one-to-one therapy rooms, with the option for group therapy sessions if suitable.

SPEAK OUT!®

SPEAKOUT® Parkinson Voice Project

SPEAK OUT!® is an individualised speech and voice therapy program designed for people with Parkinson’s Disease and associated conditions. It is an intensive program which consists of 12 one-to-one sessions across 4 weeks and focuses on speaking with intent to improve loudness and preserve speech clarity while also assisting with swallowing function. SPEAK OUT!® includes a maintenance program after the intensive therapy is completed.

Can’t make that commitment? Ask how we might be able to accommodate your availability or funding. The SPEAK OUT!® program can also be provided via telehealth to suit a busy schedule or assist when transportation is too difficult.

Lee Silverman Voice Treatment
(LSVT LOUD®)

LSVT LOUD® is a highly effective speech treatment program for people with Parkinson’s Disease and other neurological conditions. It is an intensive program consisting of 16 sessions. 4 sessions per week for 4 consecutive weeks. The LSVT LOUD® program encourages participants to think loud and increase the loudness of the voice.

Can’t make that commitment? Ask how we might be able to accommodate your availability or funding. The LSVT LOUD® program can also be provided via telehealth to suit a busy schedule or assist when transportation is too difficult.

Alternative and Augmentative Communication AAC

At Mobi, we recognise that not everyone can or wants to speak with their own voice. We work with you to see other ways to help or replace verbal communication.

  • We consider your goals and provide assessment and recommendations about:
  • If and when a low-tech and/or high-tech option is needed.
  • How you access the device. This can be directly with your hands or eyes or, indirectly with switches.
  • Which software or app provides the most appropriate vocabulary to suit your needs.
  • What hardware and operating system suit the software and best meets your needs.
  • Trials. We can assist with accessing both paid or free trials from device company.
  • Funding and reports in order to purchase or long-term-loan the device.
  • What else might be integrated with the device, such as environmental control- controlling your appliances or home with the device. Mounting the device on the table, wheelchair or other places. We work closely with Occupational Therapists to make sure AAC can be used wherever and whenever you need it.
  • Our therapists are trained in a variety of areas and use: Keyword signs, Language Acquisition Through Motor Planning (LAMP); Touch chat and Nova chat, Grid Software and several others.

Swallowing assessment and management

Our Speech Pathologists can assess your eating and drinking. We make recommendations involving:

  • Muscle strengthening and rehabilitation such as:
    – Increasing textures.
    – Swallowing tablets safely.
    – Using of Expiratory Muscle Strength Training (EMST) for swallowing function.
  • Positioning and equipment, including working with occupational therapists.
  • Texture modification and support to fund thickeners.
  • Mealtime behaviours.
  • Providing documentation through Mealtime Management Plans and Reports to Medical Specialists, NDIS or other funding bodies.
  • Support to provide information for GP referral to specialists or medical tests.
  • Mobi is also able to provide services of Dysphagia Disorders Survey, Pneumonia Risk Assessment Scale and Choking Risk Assessment Scale
